Networking & Network Talk At Disney

Friday, June 14th, 2013

Today is the final day of InfoComm13, and it started with an early-morning alarm clock reminding (forcing?) be to get to the Convention Centre for 7 a.m. to meet with Bill Coons and his team from Optocore North America, who had invited a number of consultants, integrators, TDs, media personnel, and the like to tour behind the scenes of the American Garden Theater at Walk Disney World.

The theatre itself is rather impressive – an outdoor auditorium with a capacity of over 1,000 but a lighting and audio rig reminiscent of one you’d find in a space several times that size. This summer alone, it’s hosting shows by some relatively big acts – Air Supply, Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, Boyz II Men, and even the mmm-boppers themselves, Hanson.

For the last few years, the theatre has been employing a redundant Optocore fibre ring that replaced the previous copper cable runs. The staff onsite had nothing but good – or rather great – things to say about the improvements, which, after a tour of the FOH, “monitor beach,” and amp room, we had the chance to hear first-hand, A/Bing between the two infrastructure. The difference was apparent indeed.

It was a great networking opportunity for all involved – a group of passionate people from various states, provinces, and professions; not to mention an opportunity to see parts of one of the world’s most famous entertainment destinations.

Connecting You With Content From InfoComm 2013

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

So a great first day is in the books at InfoComm 2013. The organization’s slogan of “Communicate. Collaborate. Connect.” applies as much to the various technologies and systems on display here as it does the professionals gathered to experience them all.

Welcome to InfoComm 2013

This show has not only been resilient over the years to trends – and attendees – coming and going, but it’s been extremely prosperous, attracting a steadily increasing and widening array of attendees and exhibitors from various fields. There’s a definite increase in pro audio extending beyond the contractor/integrator market; in fact, an exhibitor and fellow connect suggested that InfoComm is becoming “the” pro audio show, and it’s hard to argue with his logic.

Just About To Hit Play…

Anyone seen this? Is it awesome? Overhyped? I’ll have an opinion for you shortly. Can’t believe I’ve been asleep at the wheel this long…

Checking Out The Chan Centre

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

Last week, I had the chance to visit the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on campus at the University of British Columbia. It’s an absolutely gorgeous concert that was originally designed for classical and orchestral music performances – those not requiring much, if any, sound reinforcement. This year, the venue has been going through a revamp of its audio system, including new line arrays for louder shows and Meyer’s new CAL steerable loudspeakers for those requiring precisely-directed sound. The entire centre, including its very cool studio theatre, is being networked using an Optocore fibre ring.

The venue’s self-produced season just wrapped, and now the team is getting ready for grad madness. We’ll wish them well and look forward to catching up once that wraps up…

PS Pops Into The Warehouse Studios

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

Studio 2 Live Room at The Warehouse Studios

Andrew here, reporting from Vancouver. I had the pleasure of stopping in on the folks at The Warehouse Studios in the Gastown district of the city yesterday and man, what a treat. As if the reputation of the room and its residents wasn’t enough already, the folks I met were very welcoming and all hard at work on some slick-sounding projects.

The door from Powell St. is quite inconspicuous – just a black door with the street address “100” and a buzzer to the left. Once through, though, there’s a sunny open courtyard and private parking lot that immediately gives the vibe of some kind of exclusive compound. Once you hit reception, you’re greeted with a clean architectural look and a massive collection of vintage (and I mean vintage) recording and broadcast mics.

En Coulisse Concludes Succesful 14th Edition

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

It was a long day, but a good one. Today was the second and final day of the 14th edition of Solotech’s En Coulisse trade show and the general consensus from exhibitors is that a lot of good business took place on the second floor of Montreal’s Palais des congres.

It was a pleasure to catch up with Solotech president Denis Lefrancois and talk about his plan for the company’s operations and growth over the coming years. The company’s ambition was certainly apparent with yesterday’s announcement that new Sales & Integration offices have opened in Halifax and Vancouver.

Beyond that, there’s not much more to be said; En Coulisse is a world-class event that grows each year and continues to deliver. Check out some more photos from the event by clicking “Read More.”

Cheers from Montreal. And go Habs.
