Sunday, August 12th, 2012

Professional Sound regrets to report that industry icon Neil Muncy passed away the evening of August 10th, 2012. According to his wife, Mary, he passed “peacefully, with a smile on his face.”

Muncy had a long and celebrated career in audio. He founded SSI Inc. in 1966 and pioneered the use of op amp technology in multichannel consoles and high-speed tape duplicating systems. He was also a champion of education, sharing his knowledge with students as an instructor and guest lecturer at the Eastman School of Music, the Music Recording Workshop in Washington, D.C., and at Toronto’s Harris Institute.

“Neil was a passionate contributor and proud participant in the evolution of everything audio,” says Harris Institute Founder and namesake, John Harris, about his friend.

In 2007, Muncy was presented with The Fellowship Award from the AES, which he shared that year with Phil Ramone and Bob Ludwig. He also holds the distinction of having authored the best-selling publication in the history of the AES, The Pin-1 Problem.

We at Professional Sound wish the best to Neil’s family, friends, and peers in the industry during this time. Rest in peace, Neil.
