Suspicious Fire Further Wrecks Quebec’s Legendary ‘Le Studio’

le studioThe legendary, but long closed, Quebec recording facility, Le Studio, has been the site of a suspicious fire, according to multiple news reports. The studio – which in its heyday hosted clients like Rush, Cat Stevens, David Bowie, and The Police – had been closed and the building unused since 2008 and had fallen into disrepair.

According to the CBC, the fire department received a call around 5:30 a.m. on Friday morning, Aug. 11. It’s also reported that the fire department believes the fire was purposely set and an investigation is now taking place.

The Audio Engineering Society Announces 2017 Election Results

AES incoming President-Elect Nadja Wallaszkovits

The AES has released the list of winning candidates from the balloting in the 2017 Audio Engineering Society international elections. The newly elected officers will assume their roles in October 2017, shortly after the end of the 143rd International AES Convention in New York. Entering the office of President-Elect is Nadja Wallaszkovits, who will serve first on the AES Board of Governors and Executive Committee as President-Elect, fully assuming the Presidency in October 2018 for a one-year term. Joining the Board of Governors as Treasurer-Elect is Richard Wollrich, who will serve alongside Treasurer Garry Margolis for one year, then begin a two-year term as Treasurer. Also in October, current President Alex Case will remain on the Executive Committee as Past President for the 2017-2018 term, as current President-Elect David Scheirman advances into the Presidency.

CCBE 66th Career Development Conference Taking Shape

logoThe Asssociation of Central Canada Broadcast Engineers, Technologists & Engineers (CCBE) will hold its 66th annual Career Development Conference from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, 2017 at the Kingbridge Conference Centre in King City, ON.

The conference offers four days of technical papers, workshops and training sessions conducted by design engineers, industry professionals, and their representatives. There is teh opportunity to attend CCBE’s SBE industry training and certification, and a selection of technical papers covering a wide range of topics. Attendees will learn about radio and TV systems, HD and 4k production and post-production, compression technologies, web distribution, and terrestrial digital transmission for fixed or mobile reception. They can mingle with the other attendees and celebrate the awards presented to members of the engineering community.

Mark “Drifter” Desloges

Production veteran Mark “Drifter” Desloges has launched Drifter Rigging in Toronto. The company’s aim is to offer the Canadian market access to the most widely used automation products for mid- to higher-range productions.

The company’s first formal job was the extensive automation for the 2017 Calgary Stampede Grandstand stage, featuring Drifter Rigging’s Elevation 1+ variable speed chain hoists and Libra load cells. Additionally, in early July, Drifter Rigging and Kinesys USA hosted a Demo Day at Christie Lites’ Toronto location that featured the first North American deployment of Kinesys’ brand new Apex system.

U.S. Patent Office Rules in Favour of 64 Audio in IEM Design Dispute with JH Audio

64-2On July 19, 2017, the U.S. Patent Trial & Appeal Board (PTAB) ruled in favour of 64 Audio (formerly 1964 Ears), finding all claims of U.S. Patent No. 8,897,463, held by Jerry Harvey Audio Holdings (JH Audio), unpatentable.  A copy of the PTAB’s ruling can be found here.

The claims found to be unpatentable are directed to a dual high frequency driver in-ear monitor.  JH Audio asserted the claims against 64 Audio in a lawsuit filed in December 2014.  64 Audio sought PTAB review of the dual high frequency driver claims in January 2016.
